Introduction

Because light shines through its windows, St. Mary's Chapel is also called the "Chapel of Light". It is medium in size holding a capacity of 180 seats. It is a place often used for weddings and funerals.

① Stained glass / Windows of Light

The stained glass above the main entrance door is St. Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint of the Ignatius Church. It used to be in the old church, but it was made a little smaller before its installation inside St. Mary's Chapel.

St. Ignatius is the founder of the Society of Jesus who sent St. Francis Xavier to Japan.   In addition, the windows surrounding the entire roof are made from Japanese washi-glass. The design is reminiscent of a folding screen which is very Japanese.

② Altar and the Tabernacle

Both underwent through the same casting process. Casting is a technique in which metal is melted at a high temperature, liquefied, and poured into a mold to form the metal.

The painting of Madonna and Child on the left is an oil painting donated by the late Mr. Shizuka Murayama, a painter living in France.

This painting is the original painting of the award-winning work at the Gemmail Stained Glass exhibition held in Lourdes, France.  The gemmail technique is a technique of expressing a painting in glass by layering glass pieces of various shapes and adjusting the shades of color. In France, the Gemmail Museum is located in Toul and Lourdes, where Picasso and Jean Cocteau's paintings are displayed.
